The Concept Of A New Type Of Plaster Bandage

The new type of gypsum bandage, also known as "polymer bandage", is divided into glass fiber polymer bandage and polyester fiber polymer bandage, which are respectively made of glass fiber or polyester fiber coated with polyurethane compounds. The latter is the most commonly used and consists of multiple layers of high molecular weight fibers soaked in polyurethane and polyester, with good biocompatibility. It has the characteristics of fast hardening, high strength, and no fear of water, and is an upgraded product of traditional gypsum bandages [3], as shown in Figure 1.

Orthopedic doctors need to apply plaster to patients with fractures in order to maintain limb fixation after limb reduction. Due to the inconvenience of using plaster bandages, more and more doctors are using medical polymer bandages and splints instead of plaster bandages and braces. Usage:
1. Select the corresponding model of bandage according to the required fixed parts.
2. The fixed parts need to be padded with tissue paper or cotton covers.
3. Wear latex gloves.
4. Open the packaging (one bag at a time, not multiple at once to avoid failure). Take out the bandage and soak it in room temperature water for 3-4 seconds, squeeze 2-3 times, and remove any excess moisture.
5. Spiral wrap the fixed parts with 1/2-2/3 overlap per turn, with moderate tightness, 5-6 layers for load-bearing parts, and 3-4 layers for auxiliary parts.
6. Gloves should be shaped with wet water to ensure a tight bond and smooth surface, which should be completed within 2-3 minutes. Use an electric gypsum saw for removal.
Compared with traditional plaster bandages, polymer plaster bandages have many advantages as follows:
1. Comfort and safety: After the bandage is dry, the contraction is small, and there will be no discomfort such as skin tightening or itching when the plaster bandage becomes dry. There will also be no discomfort of burning the patient's skin due to the heat production reaction during the hardening process of gypsum due to water absorption and recrystallization.
2. Good breathability: The bandage uses high-quality raw yarn, which has good breathability and solves discomfort such as hot flashes and itching caused by long-term local tube dressing and poor breathability, which is beneficial for skin metabolism.
3. Lightweight and high hardness: The impact strength of the cured bandage after testing is 20 times that of traditional gypsum bandages, which plays a reliable fixing role in maintaining correct repositioning. The fixed materials are few and the weight is light. The polymer bandage is only 1/5 of the weight of gypsum and 1/3 of the thickness. It can reduce the burden on the affected area, promote local blood circulation, promote healing, and minimize the burden of human activities, without causing inconvenience in movement.
4. Excellent projection: The splint and bandage have excellent transparency to radiation, and the X-ray effect is clear, which can ensure that the doctor accurately grasps the bone connection and healing situation of the affected area. During the X-ray examination, the bandage does not need to be removed, which is convenient for accurate surgery, and is conducive to repositioning and understanding the healing situation.
5. Good waterproof performance: The bandage has good waterproof performance, which can prevent 85% of external water from penetrating. After the affected area comes into contact with water, it can also effectively ensure that the affected area is dry, easy to clean and care for.
6. Easy to operate, flexible, and good plasticity: When there is skin injury to the fixed part or the operation time is long, it can be fixed directly without first wetting the water. After fixation, water can be sprayed on the outer layer of the bag to accelerate the hardening speed. Good plasticity, high bending and tensile strength, and can be bent freely. Bandages can be made into tube shapes, brackets, and splints. Easy to operate, only constant temperature water is required, without any heating equipment, and fixation can be completed in a short time. Good shaping and moderate tightness.
7. Wide scope of application: orthopedic fixation, orthopedic appliances in plastic surgery, prosthetic auxiliary functional equipment, support tools, local protective brackets in burn department, etc.
8. Fast curing, starting from 2-3 minutes, fast hardening, starting from 3-5 minutes, and bearing capacity after 20 minutes. By adjusting the water temperature, the hardening time can be adjusted. Increasing the water temperature results in shorter hardening time, decreasing the water temperature, and longer hardening time. When the bandage is soaked in water, the loss of plaster is minimal. Fast drying time, completely dry within 36 hours. Strong adaptability, resistant to high temperatures (+40 ℃) and high colds (-40 ℃), non-toxic, non irritating, and non allergic.
9. Environmental protection. After shaping, it is resistant to moisture and moisture, non-toxic, non irritating, and has a fragrant odor. After being cured, it can be easily removed. Use a specialized gypsum saw to cut it open and remove it. The specialized gypsum saw will eat hard but not soft, and will not harm the skin. Completely burned to protect the environment. [3]
